Imagine choosing your doctor, plumber, or lawyer in this fashion. Millions of people you don't know deciding for you between two candidates with limited skill or integrity, and you have to stick with the result for at least four years.
Just as ridiculous is the assertion that if you do not cast one of those millions of votes for "the doctor" to rule over you, then you tacitly consent to that person. I also like the analogy to food: Would you trust even five strangers to pick your meals for the next month (let alone four years) knowing that you would be forced to eat them? Most people have a bit of an aversion to that notion, but democracy, well, that's beyond reproach.
